First_Time_At_0810_Photographer1We all want to have great photographs of our children, and sometimes we would like to get them done with professional style. We have talked to photographer Louise Brooks, a wedding and portrait specialist, from Louise Brooks Photography, Ennis, Co. Clare. Louise has given us her best tips for families wanting a portraits done by a professional.

What do I need to think about when choosing a photographer for a family portrait or photograph of my children?

Look at their style of work and see if they have a portfolio with examples of their work you can browse. The photographer will be able to show you examples online on their web page, by sending you a few images, or can you call to their studio to view their work. Discuss how you would like your family portraits captured. Think on whether you want studio or outdoor portraits, and maybe choose a photographer that can offer you both options. Make sure the photographer you choose is qualified, registered and insured.

What should I discuss with the photographer in advance?

Be sure to discuss clothing and style for portraits, as you need to decide in advance if you want portraits that are casual or more formal. The photographer should also know the ages of the children prior to the shoot so the shoot can commence quickly, as this is especially important with younger children as timing can make all the difference! List any other details or requirements you have to allow the shoot run smoothly, for example if the studio is easily accessible with a buggy, has wheelchair access, and so on.

What are the best kind of pictures to take of children?

This is down to personal preferences. If you are looking for a formal portrait, perhaps for an occasion like communion, or would you prefer a candid family portrait showing natural interaction and expressions. Talk to the photographer in advance and decide together what you are looking for.

How do I prepare my child for a photo session?

The less said the better! Over emphasising can go against you and result in false smiles and stiff poses from the children, which is not the desired look. For kiddie and family photographs You want natural and fun expressions!

My child always makes faces when he gets his picture taken, what do I do?

Nothing. You have brought your child to a professional photographer and it is their job to extract the best expressions. Say nothing to the child as this may only end up in him creating more funny faces!

My child never keeps still, does he have to?

It is not necessary for a child to be still for long. Again your photographer will have ways to grab their attention where necessary and fast. With children you must work fast so a good portrait of a child can sometimes just take a few minutes.

Is it better to be dressed up or in day ware? Any colours children shouldn't wear?

It all depends on the style of portrait you are going for, but the general rule of avoiding loud patterns and colours applies to both portrait styles.

Can a photographer do a lot of editing? Is it costly?

Editing work can be done and photographers vary in their costs for that work. Some will do a certain amount as standard, while others will charge for all retouch work. Discuss in advance your options including the costs to avoid any unwanted surprises.
