Gardening, kids and vegetables

E-mail Print PDF
FunCrafts_School_kids_0311_Gardening_kidsAs long as you have access to any outdoor space, whether it is a garden or a balcony, you could easily garden with your child. Not only does it teach children where vegetables come from, but it also may make it easier to get them to eat them.

Easiest solution

Get plug plants at a local garden centre or market. These are easy to get from early spring.

You can plant them on a sunny spot in the garden, preferably a raised bed or a small cleared area. To make it even easier, just plant in wide pots or even window sill boxes.

If you want to plant from seed, plant in modules and keep them on a sunny spot. When you get the plant plugs you plant them into bigger pots.

If you have big buckets or pots, you can mix your planting with flowers or mixing different herbs.

Try

All kinds or herbs
Lettuce mix
Peas
Runner beans

What you need

Plug plants or seed
Module pots for seeds
Large pots or buckets with holes
Canes, to support the climbers (peas and beans)

For more adventurous gardeners

Try carrots, cabbages and onions. These all will need deeper pots than the plants suggested above, but are not much harder to grow. You will only get enough vegetables to last you a couple of meals, but will be fun and tasty to grow.
