Children love pretending, and it doesn’t always have to involve expensive costumes. Engage their imagination by doing party masks with them.
Start by drawing and cutting out the shape of their favourite animal or a simple party mask in a stiff coloured or plain paper, you could also use thin cardboard. The mask size can be for the full face, half or the size of enlarged goggles.
You can then immediately let them colour and decorate the mask with paints, or for a fancy look glue a piece of coloured crêpe paper of their choice. Let them decorate freely with pens, glitter, crêpe paper, pearls, or anything else you might think of.
A good idea is to have an image available of the animal they’d like the mask to represent, point out the important features that animal might have (stripes of the tiger, pointy ears of a cat, etc.) At this age it’s probably easiest to let them decorate freely.
Either cello tape a straw to one end of the mask and let them hold it to their face by holding the straw. Or perforate each edge, by the eyes, and thread the cotton or elastic thread through the holes.
What you need:
Stiff paper or thin cardboard
Coloured wrapping tissue paper/ crêpe paper
Glue
Cotton or elastic thread, or straws
Cellotape
Scissors and sharp knife
Child’s sunglasses or swimming goggles
Paints and pens
Decorations (glitter, feathers, pearls)
