Making your own bird food

E-mail Print PDF

FunCrafts_Preshoolers_1110_BirdfoodAttract birds to your windows by making them a delicious and nutritious treat. You could also get a bird book and start learning a bit of ornithology, bird watching, with your child. You will be surprised how much your child will learn and the interest in nature it will promote.

What you need

Fat – for e.g. vegetable suet or lard, coconut fat
Empty yogurt pots
Wild bird seed mix (check the deals in Lidl)
Mixing bowl
String

What you do

Melt the fat on low heat, mix in the seeds and pour the mixture half way into the yogurt pots. Put in a string in a loop and fill the rest of the pot. Leave the pot in a cool place or the fridge until it hardens. Push the cubes out of the pots and hang them outside your kitchen window, it’ll be lovely to watch the birds eat at breakfast.

A warning! Be aware of cats, who are ferocious hunters. Place your bird food away from their reach.
