Create your own family tree

FunCrafts_Pre_schooler_0511_Create_a_family_treeEven small kids will be interested in the members of their family and how they are related, simple genealogy. Creating a visual family tree with family photos makes it easy for children to see and recognise the relationships. Simple crafts for kids.

As children this age do not read, the family tree comes alive for them by using photo cut outs. Start by collecting family photos of all immediate family members. Arrange them on a large sheet of paper, by generation, so that the children come at the very bottom.

Glue them onto their place and write the name under each picture. A good idea is to start with you as parents first, and place the children below you. Draw a line from the parents down to each child. If you are including your siblings (the uncles or aunts) place them on the same line as yourselves, their children are placed below them. Grandparents are placed above, keeping maternal and paternal side separate.

If you don’t have photos for everyone you can draw and empty box and tell your child that it will be filled next time the relative visits.

The fun part is to explain who they are, tell stories you might remember, talk about how it is to have siblings and that their grandparents are your parents, same as you are your child’s parent. It may all seem obvious to you, but children are fascinated by all those stories.
