Cutting down on back-to school costs

E-mail Print PDF

Family_Finance_0810_Cutting_school_costsHaving school going children is an extra strain on the family finances every year. The initial shopping for school books, uniform and other necessities is a hard task. We have compiled a few suggestions on how to prepare and alleviate the cost. It might not be feasible in your area, but there is no harm in trying. If you are out late this year, make sure to take notes for the next.

Barnardos states that the average cost of sending a child to school their first year is €815, which does not include school bags, sports clothing or equipment, stationery or extracurricular activities. The cost of sending a child to school has increased worth 58% since last year, according to their survey.

According to a study done last year by the Bank of Ireland, the cost of educating a child through eight years primary school is about €12,000, and the six years of secondary school costs about €13,000. A third level education, four years, costs about €42,000 and this does not include college fees.

Second hand

Search for second hand bargains both through the school, in your locality and online. When buying books, make sure they are not outdated and in good condition. Make sure you are up to date with any school books swapping opportunities in your locality. 56% or parents use a recycling facility for school necessities, according to the survey done by the Bank of Ireland.

School uniforms are an ideal item to buy second hand. You can either ask friends and neighbours, or why not organise a swapping day with other parents? Otherwise keep a constant eye out in the shops for sales and bargains.

Don't forget that you can also supplement the costs by selling off books and uniforms in good condition. Encourage your children to mind their school books throughout the year. While you can buy most of your child's books, there are also many books available at the library or second hand bookshops like Oxfam. This will be more relevant when they start reading classics.

Financial help

Read up and check if you can get the 'Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance', that will give some financial help for parents to buy school uniforms and shoes. It is calculated accordingly to the parents income. The allowance is €200 for children aged between 2-11, and €305 for children between 12-22 years of age. You can get this supplement allowance between the 1st of June and 30th September. Contact your local welfare office or see Citizeninformation.ie for more information.

Start early

Buy things in stages, that way you will not crush your budget just before the school starts. You will also be able to snap up bargains when you see them.

Buy in bulk

Just because you need it despite the price, does not mean that you can't haggle. Get together with several parents and buy things like stationary in bulk and ask for a discount. Most shops will be happy for a large secure sale, than trickling of small sales.

Buy online

Use sites listed below to find bargains, discounts, stationery and second hand books. Many will have free offers of covers or other items. Compare prices of books and deliveries.
