Fast food doesn’t necessarily need to come from the chipper. Make your own homemade burgers and encourage your kids to create their own favourite combinations of the extras and fillings.
What you need (Serves 4)
For the burgers:
500 g mince
1 egg
2-3 tbs thyme, preferably fresh
1 garlic clove, pressed
Salt, pepper
Fillings and toppings:
Fresh lettuce
Sliced tomatoes
Pickled gerkins
Sliced cucumber
Sliced onion
Cheese
Ketchup
Mayo
Relish
Other:
Oil for baking tray or frying
Burger buns
Serve with fresh salad or potato wedges
What you do
Take the mince out of the fridge some time before using it, it will be less painful on the hands than cold mince. Mix in the egg, thyme, garlic and season with salt and pepper.
You can choose to fry the burgers or bake them in the oven. They are very tasty fried, but a lot healthier baked. Use a large and deep baking tray, don’t place the burgers to close to each other. There will be a lot of liquid from the meat, but the taste will be the same.
Serve with baked potato wedges or a fresh salad. Have all the toppings on the table and let every person create their own favourite burger.
If you are a bit adventurous
You could of course grill the burgers on a barbecue for a delicious result. It’s a lot quicker than you’d expect, just wait until the flames are gone and the embers are burning hot.
