Baby Daniel was flown abroad with his parents after health emergency. A fundraising event is organised for the parents, Vincent and Deirdre Collins, in Cork the 24th of July.
We all fault the HSE at one time or another, but the story of baby Daniel, makes you happy to live in a country that cares enough for it's citizens to find the best possible care for them, despite the current economical situation.
You could of course point out that our own health service should be up to scratch, but while it's not I'm glad to know that help can be got.
Being only one week old baby Daniel contracted the Adenovirus, similar virus to a common cold, which left him unable to breathe on his own and had to be placed on a ventilator.
He was taken by air ambulance to the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, where he was treated with drugs, blood transfusion and undewent two operations due to blood clots. He is currently on a dialysis machine and is on a very slow dose of weekly antibiotics.
A fundraising night has been arranged for the parents in Cork the 24th July. The parent's stay in Stockholm is costly, eventhough their baby's medical care is covered by the HSE. If you want to contribute contact Kenneth Collins at kennethcollins149@gmail.com.
It is hard to even imagine the worry and real panic the parents must have felt, and the utter relief that they were able to find the help their baby needed. Born with a compromised immun system, baby Daniel was at a higher risk of contracting any disease.
